Description

Finasteride 1 mg is primarily used for the treatment of androgenetic alopecia, commonly known as male pattern hair loss. It works by inhibiting the enzyme 5-alpha-reductase, which converts testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a hormone associated with hair follicle miniaturization and hair loss. The reduction in DHT levels helps to slow hair loss and, in some cases, promote regrowth in men.

The medication is administered orally, typically once daily. Clinical use has shown variable outcomes depending on the duration of therapy and individual response. It is not intended for use in women or children, and exposure in women who are or may become pregnant is strictly contraindicated due to the risk of fetal abnormalities. Its use has also been explored off-label in the treatment of hirsutism in women and for prostate cancer prevention.

Finasteride may cause adverse effects, including decreased libido, erectile dysfunction, and ejaculatory disorders. More recently, psychiatric effects such as depression and suicidal thoughts have been reported, prompting warnings from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
